Yes, but the owners are known. Strangers in a strange land? No thank you.

I might have copied them. I probably also would have called the police there. And I definitely wouldn’t buy that I didn’t have an expectation of privacy in a rented room (also Florida is a two party state, which makes it extreme ly dubious the recording was legal , especially if they were recording audio).

this is why im terrified to use AirBnB. ill stick to hotels or vacation rental homes through an actual real-estate company

I assumed that every AirBnB I’ve ever stayed in was videotaping me having sex.

My most recent Motel 6 experience:

General creepiness

Tile floors in the bedroom

Loud sex next door

The sound of chains from above? (not related to the sounds next door)

In any event, I felt it was not a question whether a prostitute had been murdered here, but how many. I ponied up for better hotels the rest of the trip.

There’s a snarky comment to be made here, but I’m going to keep it classy.

I’m also not going to stay in Air BnB.

Yeah, not always best, but laminate flooring is less creepy than carpet, IMHO. We don’t use hotels much and Motel 6 that’s remodeled to the new standard fairly recently is good enough.

We checked into one in Nevada last Summer that had swamp coolers in the rooms and the chiller plant wasn’t working, which we did not determine until we got to the room. The establishment wasn’t announcing the fact. So we asked for a refund and went down the street and paid twice as much for our room, but it was pretty nice.

I have stayed in a handful of Airbnbs. They’ve always been a lot cleaner than pretty much any motel, so if somebody wants a video of me sleeping, does it really affect me? I’ll take that over bed bugs.

I religiously use Airbnb for any and all travel to everywhere. Hotels feel like prison cells to me and always have GOTCHYA fees and stupid crap attached to them. Plus the most important factors , having a kitchen to cook some meals with and a local host to talk to. I generally would pay more for the Airbnb experience but its also usually on par price-wise with  even the shady low-rent motels out there but gives at least the quality of a midrange hotel. I’ve stayed in airbnbs though that far exceeded any hotel ive been in but im not exactly a high roller so i dont have much perspective lol.

I have no doubt that tile/laminate (this was definitely tile) is easier to disinfect than carpet, and thus might actually be cleaner, but just the feeling of being in a place where they felt the need for an easy to disinfect floor makes everything feel dirtier (especially since most other surfaces in the room aren’t as easy to clean).

There’s nothing preventing some rando from sticking a wireless camera in a hotel room. At least in the Air BnB you don’t have to hear the person next to you having sex.

I’m a fit thirty something year-old , I couldn’t care less if someone wants to watch me.

This is definitely not common and is especially dependent on reviews. I have had a few questionable experiences with Airbnb but every single one of them had very few reviews and was dirt cheap. Any of the listings that had hundreds of reviews, good pictures in the ad,  and I paid a decent amount for - all of those went well and exceeded expectations. It’s generally a “you get what you pay for” and just requires some research when booking.

This is a problem at hotels as well, especially abroad. Marriott, Hyatt, Hilton, etc.... They’ve all had issues with this, some from random people but many cases allegedly originating from the local government. My boss isn’t allowed to meet with people in his hotel when traveling to certain countries (Russia, China, etc.) because it’s expected that every single word is recorded.

We use them quite often and love the concept, but the company itself can get better about their due diligence on listings, and ensuring rentals they host are actually legal, etc. It’s really uncomfortable learning once you get somewhere that you need to pretend to be the owner’s cousin, or have people staring at you for lugging bags through their condo complex in disapproval.

There are many places that could truly benefit from models like this – small towns with tourist based industry and an abundance of housing, peoples’ remote cabins, occasional rental of permanent residence while out of town etc. But whether you agree with the politics or not many cities are also putting caps on how often a property can be rented, or types of properties that can be rented out through these platforms.

As a traveler it is ridiculously unrealistic to be expected to research all the nuances of local laws. It’s entirely up to the hosts and the platforms to make sure they’re abiding by the applicable laws. Hosts can’t be relied upon because they literally could be anyone – so that leaves the platforms. And thus far they’ve done more than just turn a blind eye to illegal listings on their platforms, because they know they make a good chunk of their revenues in major cities through these listings. Good for them, good for the hosts, awkward for guests, and shitty for many communities.

You know vacation rentals through “an actual real estate company” are no different than AirBnB, right? They’re providing exactly the same service, except that i n my experience, the listings tend to be even less accurate because there’s no easy or direct means of offering public feedback.

Y ou or the other participant(s) might feel differently about the video risk if you ever want to do more than sleep, such as have sex or talk about something remotely sensitive. And I imagine you would feel differently if it was a video of your children sleeping.

If we are sharing weird AirBNB stories- I once stayed in a room on 18 th floor of a building with an e levator that only went to 16. You then got out and used service stairs to go up the final two floors. It seemed like someone divided up some storage space to make a couple of rooms. It was in Hong-Kong, it was clean and the AC worked so we gave it a pass. The only odd part was that the building was getting work done on the outside and there was bamboo scaffolding the whole way up. Elevator had warning posters to lock your windows so thieves couldn’t climb in.

Oh yeah that’s a little different , where you have an ongoing relationship with a company you trust . I certainly didn’t mean to suggest there are no good apples.

Idk, I stayed in a Motel 6 recently in the non smoking room that reeked of cigarette smoke and I left smelling like stale cigarettes. My whole bag of clothes had to be washed when I got  home -10/100 would stay there again.

That’s fair. And I prefer to not be filmed while sleeping or doing other activities, but the fact that this happened at a few locations doesn’t mean I will stop using Airbnb. You can read reviews and pick one that is highly recommended. And if someone had a video of me having sex, I’m not a public figure so it’s not like they’re going to blackmail me. There’s no kids for me to worry about either.
